St. Philip's College
Founded in 1898, St. Philip's College is a 2-year, public college listed among historically black colleges. St. Philip's College, part of the Alamo Community College system, offered more than 60 different associate's degree programs and numerous certificate programs to a student population over 10,000 in 2009-2010.
As one of the fastest growing colleges in Texas, St. Philip's College offers flexible class schedules for working and beginning students. The Allied Health Department at St. Philip's College offers associate's degree and certificate programs in 13 areas of study, including the associate's degree program in radiography technology.
Associate of Applied Science in Radiography Technology
This 2-year program, which includes summers, provides students with an advanced understanding of radiography. Learners explore how radiographers use diagnostic medical imaging equipment to produce x-rays, sonographs and related radiography materials. Students learn to use equipment and position patients. Courses include human anatomy and physiology, science and radiography basics, patient care management, radiographic imaging principles, computer information systems and radiographic imaging equipment. General education classes, such as psychology, sociology, composition, humanities, history and algebra, are also included.
In addition to coursework, participants are assigned to a local clinic or hospital to gain supervised hands-on experience working with the equipment. Students are also expected to participate in multiple practicum experiences. In the final semester of the program, learners attend a radiologic technology seminar.
Upon completion of the program, students can take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exams. After passing the exam, graduates can pursue licensure through the Texas Department of State Health Services to practice as x-ray technicians in Texas. With this degree, they can seek entry-level positions as sonographers, x-ray technicians, diagnostic imaging technologists and radiological technologists.
