The first GMO
The first commercially available genetically modified product was a tomato. This tomato called the Flavr Savr tomato was modified to have a longer shelf life. This feat was accomplished by inserting a gene that delayed the process of ripening in the tomato. The decline of the product was caused by the unfortunately high costs of operation of the business but it remained popular through its sale.
