## Question:

A 5 kg weight is hung from a vertical spring. The spring stretches by 5 cm. How much mass should be hung from the spring so it will stretch by 10 cm from its original length?

a) 15 kg

b) 10 kg

c) 20 kg

d) 25 kg

## Restoring Force of a Spring:

A spring when subjected to a change in length, exerts a force that tends to regain the original length of the spring. The force exerted by a spring in response to the change in its length is called the restoring force generated by the spring.

A spring is stretched or compressed by applying force on it. When the force is applied, the spring changes its length only by an amount at which the restoring force generated by the spring cancels out the applied force. The magnitude of the restoring force depends on the change in the length of the spring by a law known as the Hooke's Law.

We are given:

• The mass hung from the spring, {eq}m=5\;\rm kg {/eq}
• The extension in the spring, {eq}\Delta x=5\;\rm cm {/eq}

The spring will...
