Are diamonds made in a laboratory considered to be minerals?
Diamonds, which are a crystallized form of carbon, are the hardest naturally-occurring substance on earth and are mostly used as gemstones. However, because of their hardness, they also have some industrial use.
- Carbin is a tetravalent element which means that each carbon atom is able to form bonds with up to four other atoms at a time.
- Carbon naturally occurs in three different pure forms, amorphous (which lacks a crystalline structure), graphite, and diamond. The differences between these forms lie in the different arrangements of the carbon atoms.
- We're able to form carbon into numerous different allotropes like buckyballs, carbon nanotubes, nanofibers and many others.
