Question:

Assume a flat surface where the coefficeient of static friction is 0.72 and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.34. What horizontal force is needed to start the mortion of a 59 newton block moving along a wooden floor? what force will move it at constant speed?

Friction:

Friction is the resistive force which arises between the two objects in contact with each other when there is a relative motion between them. Friction is generally of two types i.e. kinetic friction and static friction.

If an object is placed on a surface, then in order to move it, we have to first overcome the force of static friction. Once the object is set in motion, the frictional force it experiences is the kinetic friction.

In general, frictional force is expressed as:

{eq}f_{friction} = \mu\ N {/eq}

where:

  • {eq}\mu {/eq} is the coefficient of friction
  • {eq}N {/eq} is the normal force

Answer and Explanation:

Given data:

  • {eq}\mu_{s} = 0.72 {/eq} is the coefficient of static friction
  • {eq}\mu_{k} = 0.34 {/eq} is the coefficient of kinetic friction
  • {eq}W =...
