## Question:

Describe in technical details how magnetic levitation works. Give an estimate of the field strength in Tesla using the equations on how large a magnetic field and or current are needed to levitate a train such as that in Disney World. What are the advantages/disadvantages of magnetic levitation vs. air jets such as those on an air hockey table?

According to the faraday law, the induced emf is directly proportional to the change in magnetic flux in a unit time. When the magnet moves towards the loop, a current will flow in one direction, which means the current depends on the change in the field per unit time.

The magnetic levitation mainly works on two fundamental laws:

1) Lenz's Law

In the Magnetic levitation to counteract the effect of the electromagnetic force is used. The total combination of forces that is gravitational, electrostatic, and magnetic field acting in the object, then the position of the object is unstable.

The expression of magnetic pressure on a superconductor is given by.

{eq}\begin{align*} P &= \dfrac{{{B^2}}}{{2{\mu _o}}}\\ {B^2} &= P \times 2{\mu _o} \end{align*} {/eq}

Here, B is the magnetic field and {eq}\mu {/eq} is the permeability

.

When the magnetic material or system is able to attract each other with force, then such forces are called magnetic field strength. The magnets in the maglev train are used to produce lift for magnetic levitation, either Ferromagnets, diamagnetism, electro-magnets or any other magnet.

• The air jet is inflexible, and magnetic levitation is not.
• The magnetic levitation is faster than air jet.
• The track of maglev trains is expensive as compare to railroad tracks.
• As compared to the maglev trains, the air jet cannot carry the large containers.
