Elements of Organizational Culture

The key elements of organizational culture include:

  • Norms: Organizational culture includes certain norms related to how things can be done following the rules and standards set by the organization that employees need to follow.
  • Values: Values refers to the views, goals, and philosophies related to the organization and which the organization strives at sharing it with others.
  • Purpose: The organizational culture should possess a great sense of empathy and ethics, it means that people should know the purpose of following a particular culture and being a part of the solving various problems than only being oneself. The organizations should have a mission in order to make their employees clear with the goals and members of the team.
  • Sense of belongingness: The employees must possess a sense of belongingness towards the employees who have similar goals, values, principles, etc. Developing a sense of belongingness is very simple and can be developed through arranging parties, trips, etc. where people get to communicate with each other. It may vary from organization to organization.
  • Communication networks: It is one of the important elements of the organizational culture. The networks not only concentrate on communicating relevant and valuable information to perform a job effectively but also leads to social interaction between the employees, keeping in mind the primary task of the organization.

Importance of organizational subcultures

The large organizations have multiple numbers of subcultures, which have some core values of the dominant culture and some unique values of the subculture. The subcultures are important when the people of a particular group focus on sharing a problem or a situation. Thus, it also occurs and is important when the members of the group are far apart but have some common goals to be accomplished.

The subcultures are very less rooted in comparison to a large culture. For example, an individual may enter a sub-culture for a precise period of time and then migrate to some other. The group of people who possess an interest in musical ventures or, dramatic ventures, etc. is part of a sub-culture. These groups may also undergo certain values of the dominant culture and, perform in ways to distinguish themselves from the larger culture. The sub-groups seldom oppose the opinions and beliefs of the larger culture.
