The majority of carbon dioxide in the bloodstream is transported as a bicrobonate ion by reacting with water through the enzyme carbonic anhydrase. This reaction produces a bicarbonate ion and a hydrogen ion. Therefore, by breathing more, we expell more CO2 and thus lower hydrogen ion concentration, or vice versa. This is tightly controlled in the body.
