Explain the process of protein synthesis from mRNA to protein.
Definition of Protein Synthesis:
Protein synthesis is the process used to create proteins in cells. This process occurs in two primary steps: transcription (copying) and translation (synthesis).
Answer and Explanation:
During transcription, a strand of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is copied into a strand of messenger ribonucleic acid, or mRNA. During translation, the mRNA will travel to a ribosome, located in the rough endoplasmic reticulum of the cell. Here, the ribosome will interpret the codon, or series of three nucleotides, on the mRNA. Transfer RNA, or tRNA, will match the complementary anticodons to the mRNA codons. This process will repeat, forming amino acids, or the building blocks of proteins, until protein synthesis is complete.
