Question:

Explain whether the final model of backward elimination with AIC is always the same as the final model of forward elimination with AIC.

Variable selection

Variable selection is done with an aim to remove predictors that are redundant. Predictors not necessary are also removed. Variable selection can be done by either backward elimination or forward selection.

Answer and Explanation:

Backward elimination can be implemented for complex hierarchy by running it manually to determine what variables should be eliminated. Forward selection on the other hand is the opposite of backward elimination. The final model for the models will therefore not be the same. It is would be advisable to be keen when choosing what method to use because the method used determines the final model.
