Fill in the blanks.
(a) When light waves reflect from media in which the speed of light is slower, their phase (crest or trough) is _____.
(b) The trick to being able to observe interference patterns for light waves is to shine one light source through _____.
The electric field and magnetic field propagating orthogonal to each other forms up the light waves known as electromagnetic waves. The light waves also exhibit particle nature as corroborated by experiments like photoelectric effect, Compton effect, etc.
Answer and Explanation:
(a.) The light waves gets slower in an optically dense medium where the frequency of the light waves remains unchanged as it is a function of energy of the light however the wavelength do get altered. The wavelength decreases when the waves get slower as result of which the distance between any two adjacent crests or trough becomes less.
(b.) The trick to being able to observe interference patterns for light waves is to shine one light source through two separated slits where the distance between nodal and anti-nodal lines of the interference lines formed are inversely dependent upon the distance between the slits. The width of the slits however must be comparable to the dimensions of the wavelength of the light source.
