Anomeric effect predicts the most stable conformation of a cyclohexane ring when one of the substituents contains a heteroatom and it is attached next to the oxygen atom of the pyranose ring. The substituent containing the heteroatom will occupy the axial position. This is known as the Anomeric Effect.
