Question:

For making coins, why is zinc a good choice? What are some reasons why someone would choose zinc?

Properties of Zinc:

Zinc is a non-ferrous metal with various useful properties that make it a good choice for several applications including coinage. Some of its physical properties include low density, resistance to corrosion and formation of hard alloys when mixed with other metals.

Answer and Explanation:

Zinc metal is brittle but it becomes quite malleable at high temperatures of the range 100-150 degree C.Also it forms strong, corrosion-resistant alloys when mixed with metals like copper or nickel. But the most important property due to which zinc is preferred over other coinage metals is its cost-effectiveness. Due to low density, the number of coins can be cast from the same amount of zinc is more compared to bronze, brass or copper .

Hence, zinc is considered a good choice for making coins.
