An aldehyde or a ketone can be converted into a hydrazone. A hydrazone can be prepared in the laboratory by the acid catalyzed reaction between an aldehyde or a ketone and a hydrazine.

This formation of hydrazone by the acid is a catalyzed reaction of the aldehyde and the hydrazine. The mechanism of the reaction is given below:

  • Step 1: Protonation of the aldehyde.
  • Step 2: The hydrazine does a nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon of the aldehyde to give a tetrahedral intermediate followed by proton transfer.
  • Step 3: Deprotonation resulting in formation of a N-C double bond and loss of water as the leaving group gives the hydrazone product.
