The neuron sends information across the synaptic gap using neurotransmitters. When the presynaptic neuron sends an action potential to the terminal the electrical signal is converted to a chemical signal. Neurotransmitters are released and travel across the synaptic gap. They bind to receptors on the post-synaptic cell and cause changes in permeability to ions that can allow the neuron to send its own action potential.
