A protostar forms when the cloud of gas and dust starts to collapse on itself. This happens when the gravity the is pulling the cloud inward becomes stronger than the gas pressure that is trying to pull the cloud apart. As the cloud collapses inward the temperature increases and it begins to spin. It will break into multiple pieces, each of which will form a protostar.
