About 4800 people died from the earthquake. This earthquake is the largest earthquake to be caused by continental collision rather than subduction.

In the most severely affected area (Eastern India), the earthquake shock lasted for four to eight minutes. It started at 7:39 PM Indian Standard Time. Afterwards, many of the Brahmaputra River's tributaries were blocked due to the violent shaking which caused drastic flooding.
