To be able to solve a problem by analogy, one has to be able to extract the essence of an object to see whether or not it has any similarity (i.e., can be an analogy) with another object. Since the essence of an object is not something that is concrete, one has to create a symbolic and mental representation of the object. This directly facilitates conceptual categorization.
