Blood cells have antigens on them that the body recognizes as "self", therefore not triggering an immune system response. Humans have four different possible types of antigens on their blood cells: all will be marked with "type A"; "type B"; Type AB (which is A and B markers) or blood that has no A or B markers (which is called "type O").
