Systems biology may be defined as the computational and mathematical modelling of complex biological systems. In contrast to other approaches, which examine isolated specific biological reactions, systems biology takes a holistic, rather than a reductionistic, approach.
Systems biology examines the properties and functioning of cells, tissues and organs as systems. It involves the use of "big data", and usually describes the complex systems of cell signalling and metabolic networks.
