What caused Earth to develop layers as it cooled?
Our Earth has three main compositional layers from the surface to the center: crust, mantle, and the core. The density increases from the crust to the core. This is because heavier elements (mostly iron and some nickel) are more concentrated in the core while lighter elements (mostly oxygen and silicon) are more abundant in the crust.
