What do dreams tell us about consciousness?
Consciousness can be understood as the degree of awareness that we have. This awareness includes both awareness of ourselves and awareness of the environment around us. The topic of consciousness is a relatively new topic in the field of neuroscience and psychology.
Answer and Explanation:
Dreams can be defined as something that we experience (i.e., hallucinations) while we are sleeping. While not always, a dream typically has some narrative structure. This particular phenomenon demonstrates that there more than one state of consciousness (i.e., waking consciousness). We do experience something while we are dreaming, but this experience is different than the one we have while we are awake. While we are dreaming we can not introspect, and we have less control than we do while we are awake.
