The earth's crust together with the uppermost mantle forms the lithosphere which is further divided into continental crust and oceanic crust. The inner layers of the earth comprise of the mantle and the core. The lithospheric plates together form the topmost part of the earth which is in contact with the atmosphere.

Lithospheric plates float on the uppermost part of the mantle called the asthenosphere.

The asthenosphere is made up of solid rocks that become ductile and floats linearly causing convection currents to set up inside the crust due to inner high pressure and temperature conditions. It is due to this convection currents in the asthenosphere radiating out heat outwards that causes drifting of the lithospheric plates.
