What does a protostar look like?
Protostars occur early on in the stellar life cycle, as they are very young stars. Protostars are big clouds made up of dust and gas.

Protostars are difficult to see in the visible spectrum because they are surrounded by big dust clouds that block the light that they emit. However, we know that protostars look like stars, they just aren't as bright because they are not hot enough for fusion to occur at the center. The luminosity that we do see, is a result of the heat generated from the cloud collapsing on itself. As they heat up, the cloud flattens and forms a protostellar disk that spins around the protostar.
