What does spongy bone do?

What we may call spongy bone is actually one of the two main types of bone tissue. The first, cortical bone tissue, is the smooth and dense bone that we find in the structural long bones of the body. The other type is cancellous bone tissue which is the spongy bone. This nickname applies more to the porous appearance of the bone rather than its strength or texture. We find cancellous bone tissue at the ends of our long bones, in the pelvis, in the ribs, and even in the vertebrae of the spine.
