When reading a text, there are so many details the author presents as part of the story. Additionally, in more complex texts the author reveals the purpose subtly, leaving readers to formulate a guess as to the meaning of events in a work.

Another term for an educated guess is an inference. An inference is a possible conclusion someone makes based on prior knowledge, evidence, and logical reasoning. This is important in regards to literature because an author will often leave it to the reader to draw connections between what happens and the significance behind what happens.
