The phrase, "chronic obstructive lung disease", or COPD, refers to a combination of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. In this disease, the airways leading into the lungs become partially blocked by mucus or chronic swelling. The alveoli, or air sacs in which gas exchange take place, also become inflexible, making it more difficult to breathe.
