We multiply 2 by x to get 2x, we multiply 2 by 5 to get 10, and lastly, we add up these products to get 2x + 10. In symbols, we have the following:
- 2(x + 5) = 2x + 2 ⋅ 5 = 2x + 10
We see that the distributive property gives that 2(x + 5) is 2x + 10.
