Mount Vesuvius is a volcano. It is located in the Southern Italian region of Campania, near the city of Naples. In 79 AD, the volcano erupted and covered the Roman city of Pompeii with ash. This preserved much of the buildings and artwork in the city, and Pompeii is now a major tourist attraction and archaeological site.
Vesuvius is still an active volcano.
