Peru is a country that is located on the west coast of South America. The country contains a diversity of ecosystems, ranging from tropical rain forests to deserts. Peru's capital is Lima.

Before the Spanish conquest of Peru by Francisco Pizarro in the 1530s, Peru was the home of the a civilization. The Inca were one of the most advanced pre-Colombian civilizations in the Americas. Perus remained a Spanish colony until declaring its independence in 1821. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Peru went through alternating periods of democracy and dictatorships. Today, Peru is a democracy, but government corruption remains a major problem.
