While women in the Middle Ages were traditionally under the authority of their husband, father, or oldest living male relative, some women could and did attain a great deal of prestige on their own. These women tended to be religious figures who used the religiosity of the day to their advantage. They were not manipulating this cultural state, for they firmly believed in what they taught, and sought to use their authority to further help those around them.
