Galen is known for various medical discoveries and observations, including his robust understanding of anatomy. Galen identified cranial nerves and recognized the valves of the heart. He understood the role of arteries and identified the differences between arteries and veins. He studied the spinal cord to evaluate the roles of the spinal nerves. He also classified the four fluids of the body: blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. These became known as the four humours.
