Born on December 30, 1784, Long was an explorer for the U.S. Army, and an engineer who specialized in railways and topography. He was also declared one of the most creative explorers who lived during the 1800's.
His expedition into the Great Plains was first called the 'Great Desert' by him. Today, this area is still known as the 'Great American Desert'.
