Tens of thousands were killed in Japan on 1 September 1923 during the Great Kanto Earthquake. The earthquake caused many buildings to collapse, yet one of the main causes of death were the fires which broke out as a result of the quake.

The Great Kanto Earthquake was extremely powerful because of the nature of the fault line which caused it. The earthquake was caused by movement as the Philippines Sea Plate subducted under the Okhotsk Plate, which resulted in powerful shocks felt on the surface.
