About the Course
The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (ELA) were created by soliciting feedback from students, educators, and parents regarding which competencies should serve as benchmarks for student progress and teacher evaluation in an effort to make standard the best practices across the nation. The ELA standards were developed to define literacy not only in a vacuum of English literature and creative writing, but also in subject-specific formats, providing a framework for educators to evaluate the language use of students in history, science, social studies, and other technical subjects as well.

Argumentative Writing Introduction (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.7.1A)
Standard: Introduce claim(s), acknowledge alternate or opposing claims, and organize the reasons and evidence logically.
The lessons under this standard help students understand the components of an argument and how to present claims, counterclaims, and evidence within a solid argument.
Reasoning & Evidence for Arguments (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.7.1B)
Standard: Support claim(s) with logical reasoning and relevant evidence, using accurate, credible sources and demonstrating an understanding of the topic or text.
This lesson outlines methods of appealing to an audience, how to evaluate reasoning, and finding/using sources to support and evaluate arguments.
Phrases & Clauses (CCSS. ELA-Literacy.W.7.1C)
Standard: Use words, phrases, and clauses to create cohesion and clarify the relationships among claim(s), reasons, and evidence.
Assign these lessons to give students practice in understanding different types of clauses and phrases; with lessons on parallelism, conjunctions, and dependent/independent clauses to boost excellent composition skills.
Writing Style (CCSS. ELA-Literacy.W.7.1D)
Standard: Establish and maintain a formal style.

Informative & Explanatory Texts (CCSS. ELA-Literacy.W.7.2A-F)
Standard: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
These lessons explore informative essay basics, including: organizing ideas, comparing/contrasting, cause/effect relationships, brainstorming, developing a thesis, writing transition sentences, using and citing reference material, and the importance of precise language.
Narrative Writing (CCSS. ELA-Literacy.W.7.3A-E)
Standard: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
Share these lessons with students to help them understand narrative essays and techniques. Explore dialogue, pacing, reflection, description, and using transitions to show shifts, relationships, and sequences in writing.
Targeted writing (CCSS. ELA-Literacy.W.7.4)
Standard: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience..
Share these lessons to provide instruction on responding to prompts and focusing the writing on the appropriate task, audience, and purpose.
Proofreading & Editing Writing (CCSS. ELA-Literacy.W.7.5)
Standard: With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on how well purpose and audience have been addressed.
Teach students to improve writing through practice and effective editing and proofreading with these lessons on revision.
Distribution of Writing (CCSS. ELA-Literacy.W.7.4-6)
Standard: Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and link to and cite sources as well as to interact and collaborate with others, including linking to and citing sources.

Research Skills (CCSS. ELA-Literacy.W.7.7)
Standard: Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions for further research and investigation.

Proper Citation (CCSS. ELA-Literacy.W.7.8)
Standard: Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.
Encourage good citation and reference practices to help students understand and avoid plagiarism with the fun videos in these lessons.
Text Analysis (CCSS. ELA-Literacy.W.7.9)
Standard: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
This lesson helps students develop literary analysis skills through inference, constructing meaning, using visualization, interpreting meaning, compare/contrast, and other reading strategies meant to pull the author's meaning from context and symbolism.
Range of Writing (CCSS. ELA-Literacy.W.7.10)
Standard: Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.
Use these lessons to help students organize and write good essays, develop an effective writing style, and create good, captivating theses.
