The information presented in this collection of videos is based on expectations laid out in the Common Core Standards for reading literature in grades 11-12. These lessons can be used as supplemental resources when covering the major concepts necessary to reading, analyzing, discussing, interpreting, and understanding literature.
The collection includes a vast pool of American and British works accompanied by lessons that focus on concepts such as understanding literary characteristics, comparing and contrasting genres, and analyzing a work's impact on society.
Cite Textual Evidence: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.1
Standard: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain.
Lessons in this chapter cover concepts necessary to understanding various texts, such as essays, stories, and poems. Topics include analysis of a literary passage, determining the main idea, and understanding the importance of one's audience. Active reading strategies such as constructing meaning and drawing inferences through textual clues are addressed.
Themes & Central Ideas: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.2
Standard: Determine two or more themes or central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to produce a complex account; provide an objective summary of the text.
This chapter tackles the often difficult concepts of theme, motif, and main idea. Using inference and interpretation, students will find meaning in both poetry and prose.
Analyze Story Elements: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.3
Standard: Analyze the impact of the author's choices regarding how to develop and relate elements of a story or drama (e.g., where a story is set, how the action is ordered, how the characters are introduced and developed).
These lessons focus on the author's use of characterization in fiction. Students will study the impact of characters' roles in a story, the importance of dialogue, and how to interpret the author's tone.
Word Choice & Meaning: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.4
Standard: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including words with multiple meanings or language that is particularly fresh, engaging, or beautiful. (Include Shakespeare as well as other authors.)
In this chapter, students explore their understanding of the connotative and denotative meanings of words as well as the mood and tone within a text. The lessons help students develop skills in distinguishing between figurative and literal language.
Structure of a Text: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.5
Standard: Analyze how an author's choices concerning how to structure specific parts of a text (e.g., the choice of where to begin or end a story, the choice to provide a comedic or tragic resolution) contribute to its overall structure and meaning as well as its aesthetic impact.
These lessons present elements of a story such as foreshadowing, setting, and plot. Students learn how the author, through these elemental details, can create effects like tension, surprise, and mystery. Students also examine emotion in poetry.
Point of View: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.6
Standard: Analyze a case in which grasping a point of view requires distinguishing what is directly stated in a text from what is really meant (e.g., satire, sarcasm, irony, or understatement).
In this chapter, students are introduced to the various points of view through which a story can be told. Elements, such as irony, satire, parody and sarcasm, are covered as well.
Analyze Interpretations of Works: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.7
Standard: Analyze multiple interpretations of a story, drama, or poem (e.g., recorded or live production of a play or recorded novel or poetry), evaluating how each version interprets the source text. (Include at least one play by Shakespeare and one play by an American dramatist.)
This lesson teaches students how to analyze the performance and its rendering of the text, while listening to interpretations of a piece of literature.
American Literature: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.9
Standard: Demonstrate knowledge of eighteenth-, nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century foundational works of American literature, including how two or more texts from the same period treat similar themes or topics.
These lessons cover American literary periods spanning from Native American literature to contemporary works. The chapter includes poetry, essays, novels, stories and dramas for examination.
British Literature: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.10
Standard: By the end of grade 11, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 11-CCR text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
British works, from medieval to 19th-Century literature, are provided for analysis of theme, characters, plot, and societal impact.
