This study guide course offers an extensive overview and practical study plan that can help you prepare for the OAE Earth & Space science assessment. Aligned with the exam's content areas, this course helps you review the foundations of astronomy, geology, oceanography and much more. By the end of the course, you should be able to:

In this course, you'll review a total of 262 lessons that are grouped into 26 chapters. We've designed this course to be simple, flexible and easy to use. You'll watch engaging video lessons that come with short self-assessment quizzes. Preparing & Registering for the OAE Earth & Space Science Exam
This study guide allows you to brush up on the concepts and skills you'll be asked about on the OAE Earth & Space Science exam. Our lessons look at topics including safety procedures for the science lab, units of measurement, and procedures for scientific inquiry and research. Other lessons examine the earth's materials/structure and how the planet has changed throughout its history. You'll review weather, the oceans and freshwater, and look at climate change. The universe and our solar system are covered in this course, too. After you complete each lesson, you can assess your knowledge with the brief quizzes that accompany them.
The exam is offered on many dates throughout the year, at testing centers in Ohio and in other states as well. To register, you'll need to create an account and choose a date and site to take the exam. You'll get an e-mail that confirms your registration. On test day, you should report about 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. You'll need to show a photo-bearing, government-issued piece of identification, such as a driver's license or passport.
Scoring the OAE Earth & Space Science Exam
Your scores will be posted to your online account anywhere from two to six weeks after taking the exam, depending on your test date. Scores can be e-mailed to you if you request it. The Ohio Department of Education will be notified of your scores, as will the institutions you designated at registration. You'll need a score of 220 or better to pass the OAE Earth & Space Science exam.
The exam has five sections, called domains. There is no time limit on answering questions in each domain, but the entire exam must be completed within the exam's three hour total time limit.
Nature of Science
Percentage of assessment score: 18%
Exam topics covered: Design of scientific investigation, scientific notation, science history, concepts in other sciences, science in the media, and the interrelationships between mathematics, technology, engineering and science.
What you'll study: Our lessons offer information on scientific research, science history, controversies in physical science, steps in scientific investigation, how to interpret graphs and tables, experimental design, laboratory safety procedures, scientific notation, modern scientific theories and STEM education.
Percentage of assessment score: 25%
Exam topics covered: Relative dating, theory of evolution, plate tectonics, the rock cycle, minerals, soil types, the earth's internal structure, physical and chemical weathering, how glaciers alter the landscape and the impact of climatic and geographic conditions on the landscape.
What you'll study: This study guide includes facts on the geologic time scale, the origin of life, evidence for evolution, fossil evidence for biological diversity, tectonic plate movement, geological folds, volcanoes, types of rocks, natural resources, the earth's internal structure, factors that affect weather and causes of soil erosion.
Oceanography and Freshwater Systems
Percentage of assessment score: 19%
Exam topics covered: The hydrologic cycle, physical structure of ocean basins and coastlines, characteristics of ocean water, tides, ocean currents, factors that influence stream flow, watersheds, properties of groundwater and management of freshwater resources.
What you'll study: Theories about the formation of the oceans, properties of ocean water, ocean circulation and the impact on the climate, changes in sea level, drainage basins, the role of the groundwater system, water supply issues, water pollution and water conservation are among the topics this study guide examines.
The Atmosphere, Weather and Climate
Percentage of assessment score: 19%
Exam topics covered: Layers of the atmosphere, global wind patterns, high- and low-pressure systems, air masses, types of clouds, how bodies of water influence the formation of weather, weather maps and symbols, major climate regions, climate phenomena such as El Nino and monsoons, and causes of past changes in global climate.
What you'll study: Our study guide provides review on components of the atmosphere, wind, solar energy, the effect of global warming on climate, difference in weather and climate, precipitation, tornadoes, hurricanes, how geography influences weather, meteorology, climate regions and how we can mitigate the effects of global climate change.

Exam topics covered: Structure of the sun, types of stars, characteristics of galaxies, theories on the origin of the universe, components of our solar system, interactions of the earth, sun and moon and the motions of the star and planets relative to Earth.
What you'll study: The Big Bang Theory, models of the universe, supermassive black holes, types of galaxies, the formation of the Milky Way Galaxy, the Milky Way's structure, characteristics of the sun, star formation, how stars generate energy, how stars die, how the earth was formed, phases of the moon, tidal friction, points on the celestial sphere, measuring the distance to a star, measuring objects in the sky, dangers and benefits of space travel, and the spectroscopic parallax are among the lesson topics in our study guide.
