About the Exam
The Pennsylvania Educator Certification Tests (PECT) Pre-service Academic Performance Assessment (PAPA) is designed for prospective educators who are still in the midst of their undergraduate studies and are seeking initial certification. The test is taken on computer and is broken into three modules: reading, math and writing. Each module features 36 selected-response questions, while the writing module consists of an additional constructed-response assignment and two sentence correction assignments. You can take the modules in one single test session or individually in separate sessions. The test is available year-round by appointment on a first-come first serve basis with testing sites in Pennsylvania, across the nationwide, in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and in Canada.
Preparing & Registering for the PECT PAPA
Prepare for the test by utilizing the resources in this complete study guide. Watch the short video lessons to refresh your knowledge of concepts that will be covered on the exam. You can examine reading concepts that include understanding the meaning of words and phrases in texts, the text's purpose and organization, how to analyze and interpret text and ways to draw inferences from it. Also, get a comprehensive overview of math that includes examining whole numbers, integers, decimals and fractions, along with more complex concepts like geometry, data and statistics, probability and reasoning. The course also reviews writing strategies, revision, structure, grammar and more. You can watch the videos in any sequence that suits your studying needs. Self-assessment quizzes and chapter exams are available to test your comprehension of these concepts.
In order to take the PECT PAPA, you must complete an online registration process that involves creating an account and providing personal information. During this process, you can specify up to two program providers you want to receive your scores, in addition to the Pennsylvania Department of Education and your teacher education program. After registering, you can search for a test site and set an appointment for the exam. On the day of the exam, you must report to the test center 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time and present a current, government-issued ID. Rescheduling and cancellation must occur 24 hours prior to your appointment to avoid losing a refund.
Scoring for the PECT PAPA
Traditionally, PECT PAPA test takers have been required to earn a minimum of 220 on each module to pass the exam. However, since September 2012, test takers have benefited from the Composite Score Option that allows for a total score of 686 when all scores are added together. This option requires meeting specific guidelines. The test results for the reading and math modules are reported at the test center after the session is completed while score reports are provided within 10 business days after testing. Writing module score reports are provided within 20 business days.
