About the Exam
The Biology Keystone Exam is an end-of-course exam, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. It is designed to asses academic achievement in biology. The test is divided into two modules - Cells and Cell Processes & Continuity and Unity of Life - and is given in both paper and computer-based forms. There are two types of questions on the exam -- 64 multiple choice questions worth one point each and eight constructed response items that are graded on a 0-3 point scale. The exam is not time limited.
Preparing & Registering for the Pennsylvania Biology Keystone Exam

Scoring the Pennsylvania Biology Keystone Exam
The final exam score is expressed in a range from 1200 to 1800 points. Each score falls into one of four levels of proficiency. The specific ranges in each level of proficiency vary by test. In biology, the ranges are as follows: Below Basic, 1200-1459; Basic, 1460-1499; Proficient 1500-1548; and Advanced, 1549-1800. The score report will be sent to your school.

Time to complete: 144 minutes (estimate)
Exam topics covered: Basic biological principles, chemical basis for life, bioenergetics, homeostasis and transport, cell growth and reproduction, genetics, theory of evolution, and ecology.
What you'll study: This course includes chapters with lessons on all the biology topics covered by the Keystone Biology exam including types of cells, organic molecules, and enzymes. Lessons in bioenergetics include photosynthesis and cellular respiration, and there are lessons in homeostasis and transport as well like phospholipid bilayers, passive transport, and membrane-bound organelles. Cell growth and reproduction and genetics are covered as well with such topics as Mendel's laws, protein synthesis, and the genetic code. The final chapters in the course cover DNA technology, evolution, and ecology.
