Flashcard Content Overview

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo is a story about a young girl named Opal. Opal and her father live in the Naomi, Florida. Even though Naomi is a small town, there is a wide variety of people living there. On the outside, many of the characters seem a little strange at first. However, Opal, with the help of her dog Winn-Dixie, get to know these people more. She finds out there is much more to them than meets the eye. Gloria Dump, for example, seems eccentric and outspoken at first. However, she turns out to be great listener and source of advice. Miss Fanny Block is prone to fits of nervousness and shaking, but Opal finds out this is connected to Fanny's past. Otis is unusually quiet, and plays his guitar to animals. He has also been to jail. However, he is kind and turns out to be a friend to Opal. Amanda Wilkinson seems constantly grumpy, but is coping with a loss of her own.

Each character has a unique past that helps explain why they act the way they do in the book. Had Opal not taken the time to get to know them more, she would have missed out on some important friendships in her life.
