Flags of the World and Their Meanings

What does your country's flag mean to you? Can you imagine living in a world where countries aren't symbolized by their flags? While some of us may take flags for granted, they're important symbols of peoples and states that embody their religious beliefs and political ideologies. Given their various colors and shapes, flags can help provide the global community with clues about the different countries.

In early days, groups of people and tribes didn't use flags. Instead they identified themselves with personalized ribbons and symbols, as well as painted weaponry that was unique to their clan or community. As countries and states developed, flags were used as an identifier to claim territories and possessions. Today, flags not only represent countries, but organizations and unions, such as the Red Cross and the European Union.

Let's look at some tips that will help you understand the meaning behind all the flags of the world, beginning with color. The color red used on flags usually stands for love, blood, and strength, while white means peace and purity. Yellow is used for energy and often represents the sun. Blue usually stands for loyalty and trust, as well as harmony; it can also symbolize the sky and water. Green is for nature, stability, and safety. Orange is for joy and creativity. Black stands for power, but also for death. Purple is for wealth and luxury and is the least used color of them all.

Now that you've got the colors down, let's tackle some shapes you might see. For example, many countries, such as Japan and Bangladesh, have a circle on their flag, which represents the sun and energy. Other countries use the crescent moon shape to represent their religions, which is most common among Islamic countries. Many other countries use a cross to represent their Christian faith, such as in England and Norway.

Other common shapes include stars, stripes, and squares. For example, the Austrian flag, one of the oldest of all current flags dating back to the 1200s, has a white stripe cutting through the middle of a red background. Legend has it that a great Austrian duke returned home from battle and removed the belt from his bloodstained uniform. The part of his uniform that was underneath his belt had been preserved from the blood and remained white.
