Flashcard Content Overview

Freak the Mighty is the story of Kevin, a young boy with Morquio syndrome, which is a rare form of dwarfism that causes serious health issues. Kevin meets Max, a very large boy with a reputation for being a 'kicker,' and the two become unlikely friends.

Max and Kevin, who Max affectionately calls 'Freak,' go on many adventures together. Kevin tries to teach Max about robotics and wants to become the first robot/human hybrid.

Kevin, or Freak, is small and different so he gets picked on in school. However, he learns to use his greatest resource, his strong mind, as a defense against the world. In doing so, Freak acquires a massive vocabulary. He tries to help his friend Max with his studies and even creates his own dictionary just for Max as a Christmas present.

An important theme in Freak the Mighty is the power of words and knowledge. Kevin is even able to discover for himself what has caused his medical condition when he discovers Morquio disease by looking it up in the dictionary. The story is also about the power of friendship. On first sight, a large boy like Max with a reputation for being a bully does not seem like the type of person who would be friends with a very small boy obsessed with science. But since the two can relate to one another in a special way, they are able to see past their differences and learn from one another.
