Flashcard Content Overview

Shakespeare's Othello is a tragic play about a war hero who marries the daughter of an important man in Venice. The problems arise immediately as the said war hero is a Moor while the lovely Desdemona, his new wife, is a Caucasian woman of polite society. Publicly respected but privately mistrusted, Othello overcomes the hints about dark magic in winning over his wife's affections after their secret marriage. Othello earns even more ire from the citizens of Venice when he promotes Cassio to the position of Lieutenant over Iago, the devious war veteran who has more experience than the young Cassio and a thirst for revenge. Through a series of carefully planned misunderstandings, Iago exploits Othello's insecurities, age, inexperience, and naivete and convinces him that Desdemona has been unfaithful, an act that has far-reaching consequences for nearly all of the characters in the play. Learn more about Othello, Iago, Emilia, Desdemona, Cassio, Roderigo, Brabantio, Bianca, and the Duke of Venice in this character flashcard set.
