When the community gathers to chant the name of a new child being assigned to a family whose previous child died.
Nurturer
A person assigned to care for babies born into the community by Birthmothers. Nurturers care for the babies for one year, until they are assigned to a family.
Release
The process a person goes through when it is time for them to leave the community for some reason and go Elsewhere. Release is death by lethal injection.
Sameness
The condition in the community of everyone having like experiences. There are no decisions to make, feelings to be felt, or opinions to express.
Stirrings
Sexual feelings that occur during adolescence that are suppressed by community mandated medication.
The Receiver of Memory
The job assignment Jonas receives when he becomes a Twelve. He is to receive all the memories passed on to him by The Giver.
