When things are a part of a family, they're related. That is, they have something in common. In a word family, the words have something in common. Usually, the words are related by their spelling and their sound patterns. As you learn one or two words in a word family, you'll also be able to identify other words in that same family, which will expand your vocabulary. Learning word families has the added benefit of making the English language fun: trying to discover and list a families' words can even help you create silly rhymes and poems.
