About PARCC Exams
The Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Career (PARCC) exams measure the academic knowledge and critical thinking skills that are necessary for success in higher learning institutions and the workplace. These year-end assessments help schools identify students' areas of strength and weakness so teachers can adapt their curricula and instructional approaches to better accommodate them. The exam results are scored on a scale from 1-5, with 5 being the highest performance level. As of 2015, 12 states in the U.S. have administered PARCC exams.
There are two types of PARCC assessments available for grades 3-8 and high school grade levels. The PARCC English language arts/literacy (ELA) exams have students apply their reading comprehension and writing skills to analyze reading passages and support argument claims. Students may also interpret information from audio and video sources, and they'll analyze both fiction and nonfiction sources. ELA assessments for grade 3 contains 6 passages, and the exams for grades 4-11 consist of 8-9 reading passages.
The math assessments challenge students to utilize skills pertaining to mathematical reasoning and real-world problem solving. The math exams typically contain between 36 to 43 questions, and students will answer three different task types. Task I involves assessing math procedures, skills and concepts; Task II involves mathematical reasoning; and Task III involves the assessment of mathematical applications and models.
