10th Grade Literary Devices: Homeschool Assignment

Instructor: Megan Sarkisian
Students explore poetry through song, selecting a song and identifying literary devices used within its lyrics. Students then compose a short essay explaining how the songwriter uses the identified devices.

Assignment Instructions for Students

Songs are a form of poetry. Select a song and find as many literary devices as you can within the lyrics of the song. Afterward, write a short (300-400 word) essay explaining how the song writer used those devices. How did they contribute to the meaning and effect of the song? Devices you might look for include simile, metaphor, symbolism, irony, personification, allusion, imagery, allegory, oxymoron and sarcasm (this is not an exhaustive list).
