10th Grade Non-Fiction - Speeches: Homeschool Assignment

In this assignment, students select a political speech and identify its audience and at least three rhetorical devices used by the speech. Next, students write their own speech either concurring with or arguing against the original speaker using at least three of the same rhetorical devices.

Assignment Instructions for Students

Find a political speech and identify the following:

  • The audience being addressed
  • At least 3 rhetorical devices, such as hyperbole or anaphora, that the speaker used to improve the persuasiveness of their argument

Then, write your own 3-4 paragraph speech aimed at the same audience either arguing for or against the original speaker, utilizing at least 3 of the same rhetorical devices. Please make sure to bold the sentences containing your rhetorical device.
