10th Grade Personal Project Ideas

Instructor: Christopher Muscato

Chris has a master's degree in history and teaches at the University of Northern Colorado.

The personal project is an important part of the International Baccalaureate program. While students are ultimately responsible for designing their own projects, these ideas can provide inspiration on where to start.

IB MYP Personal Project

One of the cornerstones of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) is the personal project, in which students are able to explore a passion or area of interest in depth. The personal project is a significant undertaking that ultimately yields three physical items on which students will be evaluated: the project itself, the process journal, and the report. The following project ideas will provide students a foundation from which to start designing personal projects that will meet the IB standards and criteria. These ideas are intended to be flexible, as students will need to tailor them to their own passions and interests.

Programming

Video Game

Students will design and program their own simple video/computer game. Side-scrolling games are generally good fits for this project. This project will require students to learn about programming as well as game design, narrative, and aesthetics.

App

Students will design and program a basic app. What this app does is dependent on the interests of the students. This project will require students to practice programming skills, but also think about potential client needs, usability, and need within the market.

Building

Treehouse

Students will design and construct a physical treehouse. This design must take into account strength of materials, cost of building, engineering requirements (structural integrity and weight limits), and desired aesthetics.

Landscaping

Students will plan a complete landscaping project for their home or school. This will include the selection and arrangement of specific plants, considering needs of water, light, and environmental impact. For the project, students will draw up a formal set of architectural blueprints of their landscape design.

Arts

Mural

Students plan and complete a full mural for a large wall or public space. This project will require students to plan out their design, prepare the wall, and transfer the design into the available space.

Youtube Series

Students will script, record, and edit a Youtube series about the arts. For example, students could make a Youtube series reviewing popular films with a critical eye, or examining modern literature or urban art. In any case, the series must have a consistent theme and execution across several episodes.

Business

Nonprofit

Students will organize a nonprofit or charity organization and plan/execute its first fundraiser. This project will require students to practice budgeting, use organizational and leadership skills, and learn to manage/operate a nonprofit.

Market a Design

Students will start by coming up with a conceptual design for a product (they could create a car, a fashion item, a construction/maintenance tool, etc.). Students will conduct market research on similar products, create a simple model or sample of their product, and develop a marketing strategy.
