11th Grade Writing Poetry: Homeschool Assignment

Instructor: Megan Sarkisian
Students will write two original poems with contrasting themes, paying particular attention to the literary and structural devices used in each one. After composing the poems, students create a short essay comparing and contrasting the choice of devices used and their intended effects in each poem.

Assignment Instructions for Students

Write two original poems that have contrasting attitudes and themes (e.g. important vs frivolous, joyful vs elegaic). They do not have to rhyme. Think carefully about the poetic and literary devices you will use in each (including structural devices). Once you have written your poems, write a short (500-600 word) compare and contrast essay explaining your choices and how you intended to create different effects in each.
